“Training Day”
“Training Day”, the first UK-originated comic strip to tie in with the Transformers Revenge of the Fallen film, heralds a reboot of sorts for Titan Magazine’s Transformers title. The first Transformers film is now yesterday’s news as the magazine steams ahead tying itself (inexorably, I would imagine) to Transformers Revenge of the Fallen and its new cast of characters.
Two of those new characters, Skids and Mudflap, get their introduction in “Training Day” with a sharp, witty and breakneck script from Simon Furman. The two characters are instantly likeable and there’s a lot of chemistry between them. Simon’s clearly having fun.

Artist Jon Davis-Hunt, familiar now to regular readers of Titan’s Transformers, also looks to be having some fun. The brash approach of the artwork gloriously compliments the script. Jon’s panels are clean and coherent and his portrayals of Cybertron’s mechanical vistas are brilliantly rendered.
Titan’s approach to Transformers is very much in line with the makers behind the feature films; they’re not ashamed to have a bit of fun and that enthusiasm flows onto the printed page and makes “Training Day” highly recommended.
Verdict: four stars out of five.

“Training Day” (11 pp) was originally published by Titan Magazines in Transformers Volume 2 #1 (July 2009)
