Grimlock '90
TRANSFORMERS REVIEW
Poor Grimlock. Once a ferocious robotic dinosaur, built
with bomb shelter grade armour, now stripped down into
a 10 cm tall action figure.
He must feel as debilitated as a Tyrannosaurus who's just had all his teeth pulled out.
As part of the Action Masters range of 1990, Grimlock loses the ability to transform but gets a transforming partner instead. And like all consolation prizes, Grimlock's "Anti-Tank Cannon" borders on pathetic. Dressed in silver and neon orange, the cannon is more treaded hostess trolley than superweapon.
Posts on the base of the cannon fit into holes on the soles of Grimlock's feet. Grimlock can then squat down and then fix the holes in the underside of his fists over the posts on the cannon's handle. Me Grimlock want another 20p to ride again!
With a push of the yellow button, the cannon springs forward ready to become Grimlock's "mortar launcher". Apparently this is what passes for transformation in the early nineties. Grimlock's own hand-held weapon, a double-barreled homage to the original Grimlock's rifle, can be inserted into the front of the mortar launcher to make an unfeasibly large weapon. Grimlock cannot hold or aim this weapon without toppling over.
Grimlock the action figure is a new design, looking not much like his original form or his animation model. It's a pleasing update nonetheless, and if you follow the original Marvel Transformers comic, then it's a very good likeness to the Grimlock-after-Nucleon featured there.
Action Master Grimlock falls into the "curious collectibles" side of Transformers. There isn't much to do with him except put him on a shelf to be displayed. As step 1 of the instructions says, "Stand Grimlock". If you can't stand the rest of the Action Masters, then you're not likely to be able to do what step 1 asks of you.
Grimlock was released in 1990 as part of the Action Masters line.
