"Movie Adaptation"

COMICS REVIEW

I don't envy Kris Oprisko with his task of adapting the script of Transformers (2007) from the medium of blockbuster film to comic story. At the best of times, adaptations from one form of media to another don't sit well with me, and in the case of Transformers it's an even harder task than normal. Not even 140+ minutes is enough to squeeze in the amount of incident and spectacle of the film, so an 88-page comic is certainly going to have its work cut out.

It looks like the script used for the adaptation is a very early one, comparing its events and dialogue to the finished film. I think this is a shame, as it reads not so much like an adaptation but as a retelling. Or is that pretelling? However, some of the dialogue and plot logic are better in the comic than in the film.

Artwise, Alex Milne has done a competent job in translating from silverscreen to sequential art. The film Transformers weren't designed to be static, and it's a special talent indeed to get the characters to look good on paper.

The "Movie Adaptation", especially in trade paperback form, makes for a special momento to accompany the film, but it certainly doesn't replace it. See the film, but keep this on the bookshelf.

VERDICT:
2/5
