The Micromaster Stations are the next step up from the Patrols and Transports. Disguised as Earth-based buildings and installations, they unfold into battle platforms and come with one Micromaster “commander” each. Airwave, the first of the Decepticon Stations, is a playset consisting of a robot/F14 jet fighter and mini-airport with an impossibly under-scaled runway.

If there’s one thing that the Transformers brand has been able to boast about these last 25 years, it is the sheer elasticity of the characters’ portrayal. From the elementary look of the 1980s cartoons and comics, the hyper-real robots of Michael Bay’s films, to the vibrant cast of Transformers: Animated (and back again), it’s as though there’s a different style for every taste. There’s always been something for everyone.

Double-page spreads are something of a rarity in Transformers comics. They pose tremendous amounts of difficulty in production (particularly if a comic features mid-story advertising) in both the pre-press and printing stages.
Any image to be rendered across the two pages has to be worthwhile. You can’t take a double-page spread lightly. You can’t just say it, you’ve got to mean it.

Law enforcement has, indeed, reached new extremes. Ours is a world in which the police re-commission military armoured personnel carriers for their own means, badging them up as “Special Weapons and Tactics Team” vehicles, without much consternation from the law-abiding public. But imagine a world in which evil, war-mongering alien robots assume the form of said vehicles, lulling us into a false sense of security as they prepare their plans against us. With that in mind, Onslaught becomes the plastic incarnation of totalitarianism. But never mind that; is it any fun to play with?
