Skids (2009) | Transformers Revenge of the Fallen
Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Skids—the action figure, just as colourful as its on-screen counterpart—transforms into a Chevrolet “Beat” concept car. It’s an unusual choice for an Autobot as our robot heroes tend to opt for something more sporty and stylish.
As it is, Skids is one of the few Autobots to assume the form of a subcompact family car. In fact, the original Skids (from 1985) was one of the few Autobots to become a passenger car. The similarities between Skids (1985) and Skids (2009) end there.
With a vehicle mode licensed by General Motors, Skids features great detailing and authentic features. The car itself, E-Number green with black street detailing, while compact and realistic feels very light and hollow.
There is a staggering amount of engineering squeezed into the compact form and, for its size, there’s a great deal of (almost taxing) steps to get from car to robot. Returning Skids to vehicle mode requires such patience and dexterity that it borders on self-abuse.
Once in robot mode, Skids is a rather rotund little robot: top-heavy and hampered by a profusion of car-part panels. While there are no included weapons or accessories, a switch on the over-sized right arm will deploy the “Mech Alive” flip-out cannon and spring-loaded punching action.
The entire upper torso is comprised of interconnected armour panels which move when the Chevrolet logo in the centre of the chest is pressed. The head also nods, presumably to sexually explicit rap music.
True to the character featured in Transformers Revenge of the Fallen, Skids’s head sculpt is, to put it delicately, not entirely the best looking of Transformers. Still, the level of detail should only be commended, and the gold-plated tooth sported so proudly by the character is included. Let’s hope the Autobots’ dentist has treatments for Gold Plastic Syndrome.
Skids will appeal either to fans of the character of the film and/or collectors with nimble fingers who appreciate a challenge.
Verdict: two stars out of five.
