Mixmaster | Transformers Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
In Transformers Revenge of the Fallen, the bulk of the Decepticon army/cannon fodder is based on construction vehicles. They’re everywhere, hiding. But in Mixmaster’s case, it’s probably quite difficult to hide from Autobots with the giant Decepticon logos painted on his mixing drum. But when were construction vehicles supposed to be subtle?
Based loosely on the “Mack” mixer featured in the film, Mixmaster is a solid and very detailed cement mixer. There are lots of details included on the vehicle, such as a ladder, cab mirrors, and a little articulated chute for pouring cement. It’s a bit of a shame, then, that the actual drum doesn’t rotate. But there’s a good reason for that.
The vehicle’s drum is distinctively painted with silver stripes and the large Decepticon symbols. If only the silver paint was a bit more generously applied to the rest of the vehicle (exhaust pipes, front guards, etc), then the look of the cement mixer would be perfect.
Mixmaster unfurls and spreads out quite considerably from inside the vehicle mode. The transformation is challenging, but at the same time logical and very well engineered. Mixmaster actually has three modes; the third “artillery” mode (which is more or less the robot mode doing its press ups) allows the spring-loaded missile launcher to be aimed properly.
Mixmaster’s grey colour scheme in robot mode is enhanced with dark magenta highlights. The outer shells of the mixing drum, positioned correctly, make for excellent shields. The general shape of the robot, much like Bonecrusher from Transformers (2007), consists of over-large arms and walnut-like head sculpt. It’s all very “Hollywood Alien”.
For collectors looking for a solid vehicle mode coupled with a challenging (but not frustrating) transformation and plenty of details, this particular Constructicon is an accomplished mix.
Verdict: three stars out of five.
