Transformers Review —

Bonecrusher (2007)

As the Decepticon with the least amount of screen time in the Transformers film, and yet another Transformer manufactured in the wrong size category, I had little to no interest in Bonecrusher. But, Bonecrusher comes as a surprise. In a minefield of hit-and-miss Decepticon designs, Bonecrusher is refreshing and exudes a charm all his own.

Bonecrusher | Transformers (2007)In keeping with the military theme of the majority of the film’s Decepticons, Bonecrusher possesses an alternate mode of a “Buffalo” armoured mine-clearing vehicle, complete with fork-like scoop. This is an alternate mode never before seen in a Transformer before.

And, much like Barricade, the general “peace-keeping” nature of the vehicle mode deliciously hides the evil Decepticon within. Moulded almost entirely in a desert pink colour scheme, Bonecrusher looks like Starscream’s younger, choleric brother.

The one sad thing about Bonecrusher is that he’s far too small. His Deluxe-Class scaling makes him roughly 1/60 scale of a real-life “Buffalo”. But having said that, the amount of detail pressed into such a small package is more than commendable. Even the “bonecrusher” logo is painstakingly recreated and screen printed onto the side of the vehicle. Another nice touch is the metallic Decepticon logo subtly adorned onto the mine-scooper.

Bonecrusher | Transformers (2007)Bonecrusher’s robot form is neatly housed within the vehicle mode. Essentially, opening and unfolding the vehicle inside-out reveals the robot. In this mode, Bonecrusher screams “Vehicon”, sporting a Beast Machines-inspired form. It’s a disappointment, however, that though the legs have wheel-mountings the wheels don’t fold down to form the skating-through-buses form seen on the big screen. And with a head that only a squirrel could appreciate, the aesthetic of the robot mode is very much take-it-or-leave it. Bonecrusher is an over-tightened, clenched fist of white-hot hatred. It’s positively charming.

There is no “automorph”, but instead the mine-catching claw splits into two and can be opened/closed with the slide of a switch. The robot arms also have extending claws, to complete the look.

For his diminutive size, Bonecrusher is incredibly detailed in both modes. And with a novel transformation sequence and a robot mode brimming with character, Bonecrusher is possibly the most diverting and entertaining of all the Transformers from 2007.
