Blitzwing
Function: Air and Ground Commando
"Destroy first, think later."
First Appearance: Transformers 82
Significant Appearances: Transformers 82, 88, 103, 123-124, 126-127, 129, 154, 160, 175, 184-185, 197, 206-207, 210, 225, 265, 270, 275, 283. Transformers: Generation 2 7
Possessing a cruel sense of humour, Blitzwing is an overly aggressive and bellicose Decepticon warrior. As a triple-changer, he is especially dangerous; able to switch between jet, tank and robot modes within a matter of seconds.
Marvel Comics: Blitzwing was introduced in the Marvel comics during the "Target: 2006" epic as a member of the original Decepticon Mayhem Attack Squad. Like his fellow Triple-Changer, Astrotrain, he was more of a background character, and as such was never given true character development. In the few stories that he did appear in, he was usually in the background during battle.
Dreamwave Comics: In the Dreamwave comics, Blitzwing was the centre of certain controversy. He first (and apparently erroneously) appeared in the first "Generation One" mini-series in a flashback. Another apparent shouldn't-have-been-there appearance was in the the first "The War Within" mini-series. In the second "The War Within" series, Blitzwing was one of four Transformers whose spark contained part of a key to open the seal of Primus.
IDW Comics: Blitzwing was part of Starscream's Infiltration unit on Earth and was partnered with Skywarp. The pair were charged with the task of eradicating any evidence of a Decepticon presence on Earth. When Megatron realised that the unit had broken protocol and travelled to Earth, Blitzwing was confident enough to attack his former leader. However, Blitzwing was near-destroyed by Megatron for his insurrection.
Transformers: Blitzwing was was released by Hasbro in 1985. Along with Astrotrain, Blitzwing was one of the first Triple-Changers, a Transformer with two separate vehicle modes; in this case a MiG-25 jet fighter and a tank. Considering his release during the last years of the Cold War, it seemed an odd choice of alternate mode of an "enemy" jet fighter released as a toy in the USA.
To date, no other Transformer with the name "Blitzwing" has been released.
In 2005, the original Blitzwing toy was re-issued in Japan. At the same time, e-Hobby released a recoloured Blitzwing as "Overcharge".
