“Alliance”

IDW Publishing Transformers Revenge of the Fallen: Alliance #1“Alliance” (88 pp) was originally published by IDW Publishing in Transformers Revenge of the Fallen: Alliance #1-4 (December 2008-March 2009)

The four-issue “Alliance” mini-series bridges the gap between IDW’s own “The Reign of Starscream” series and Paramount/Dreamworks’ “Transformers Revenge of the Fallen” feature film. But that’s the problem, the story functions merely as a bridging piece and offers nothing of deeper substance.

It is clear that writer Chris Mowry’s hands are tied in terms of what he can do and where he can go with the story’s plot and characters. While there are some highlights (including some nice touches of humour), and an interesting subplot involving the character called Wreckage, the plot drifts from tying up the loose ends of the first film to setting things up for the second without any cohesion of events in between.

Since his work on “The Reign of Starscream” and the official “Movie Adaptation”, Alex Milne’s artwork has matured and it looks like there’s much more confidence in portraying the film’s character designs.

All in all, “Alliance”, despite Chris Mowry’s best efforts, is a tepid tale that lacks any lasting impact.
